Electric guitars have moving parts that require periodic attention and maintenance. These parts include the tuning machines, strings, knobs or dials, and the tremolo bar (for some guitars). Here are 4 vital tips in maintaining your electric guitar.
1. Tuning machine
Many of the electric guitars sold in the market have maintenance-free tuning machines. You can tell that it is if the tuning machine is fully enclosed and you can't see any exposed gears. Whether enclosed or not, tuning machines are relatively easy to maintain. All you need to do is to wipe them clean with a lint-free cloth every three months or so, as they can gather dust. If the gears are exposed, you can apply petroleum jelly after clearing off any dirt to lubricate the gears. Wipe off any excess lubricant so that dirt and dust will not adhere to them.
2. Strings
The guitar strings is perhaps the most susceptible to wear and tear and while they are relatively cheap and can be easily replaced, cleaning them before and after playing will extend their life and keep them from rusting and thinning out. How often you should replace your guitar strings depend on how often you use them. Some common indications that it's time to change your guitar strings are when it sounds dull (as opposed to bright), when it's harder to keep it in tune, when there are dull spots on the strings, and when there is rust or too much discoloration.
3. Knobs
You can gently clean the knobs of your guitar periodically with a clean damp cloth. Make sure that you turn all the knobs every so often when you play your guitar so that dirt and debris do not build up at the inner part and immobilize the knobs.
4. Cleaning
Every time you use your guitar, it is a good habit to wipe off the instrument with a clean lint-free cloth before and after playing. Changing the strings is also a good time to clean every nook and cranny of the fret board, the bridge, and the body. A soft damp cloth is ideal for wiping off the surface of your guitar, but you can also check your guitar manufacturer's recommendations from their website. Some recommend a certain type of wax or cleanser for through cleaning. Be wary of using any solutions or chemicals that is not recommended by the manufacturer as these can ruin the finish of your guitar.
Periodic maintenance as well as general cleaning of your guitar will ensure its tip-top condition for years to come.
