You've seen the blinking lights and vividly colored symbols. You've heard the clinking sound of coins and the elated cries of joy. Slot machines may seem like new technology to many. Sure, the current video slot machines are newer than the older one- armed bandit relatives. However, you might be surprised to know that the concept of a slot machine has been around for over a hundred years now.
The first slot machine was invented at end of the 19th century in San Francisco, California. A man named Charles Fey is credited with the invention. The original slot machine, called the Liberty Bell, featured three rotating reels. These reels included five different symbols. These symbols were horseshoes, spades, hearts, diamonds and a Liberty Bell. The best spin a planner could get on this machine was all three reels landing on the Liberty Ball. This would provide the largest payout.
Even though many laws were passed prohibiting gambling, demand for these slot machines still continued. Some even found ways to circumvent these strict laws. These adapted machines gave out chewing gum rather than monetary rewards. The reels were emblazoned with pictures of the different chewing gum flavors. This is the origin of the cherry and other fruit symbols that can still be found on some slot machines today.
Eventually, slot machines were developed that utilized electromechanics during the 1960's. Bally was the original developer of these machines. Payouts could be made easily and automatic without the assistance of a machine attendant, ideal for the casino. With the beginning of this newer technology the side lever would become a thing of the past as the mechanism was no longer required to operate the machine. Although some machines still have the lever as an option for those who want to experience it.
The creation of video games influenced slot machine construction. In 1996, the first video slot machine was introduced. The game was known as Reel ‘Em, which centered on a fishing theme. The game even had a bonus round which provided further appeal.
With the widespread use of the internet, slot machines soon appeared online in various online casinos. Even with changing times, the concept of the slot machine has stood the test of time and been able to adapt using different forms of technology. Who knows what the future has in store for new ways to enjoy this fun-filled game.
