Technological improvements over the years have enabled different styles of electric guitar to approximate the sound and feel of other electric guitar brands. Yet semi acoustic guitars have a unique sound that is notoriously difficult to capture on other models.
Semi acoustic guitars, or ‘hollow body’ guitars, should not be confused with acoustic electric guitars. The latter are simply designed to enable the sound of a standard acoustic guitar to be amplified. Semi acoustic guitars on the other hand are, first and foremost, electric guitars, but with an acoustic twist; the twist being a sound box which adds an attention-grabbing resonance to the electric guitar voice.
Many would say that the sound of semi acoustic guitars is a ‘retro’ sound. There is an element of truth in this, given that semi acoustic guitars can lend themselves to evoking an echoing ‘rockabilly’ tone. However, they are also extremely versatile instruments which are capable of generating both mellow and heavier sounds. Indeed, the fact that they are used by many contemporary indie bands shows that it is the acoustic kick rather than the way in which the guitars are played that make them so popular.
The look of the semi acoustic guitar could also be labeled ‘retro’. Many however would argue that it is simply a timeless ‘classic’ look, on a par with the leather jacket and blue jeans. Certainly, our range of great-value semi acoustic guitars at Fret Music will please many.
