If you are like me, I have struggled on and off with my weight for years. The result of getting a little older, losing that teenager metabolism … but still eating like a growing teenager was a lot of excess belly fat.
In fact, I saw my waist line grow first by an inch. then two inches, then 4 inches until I finally reached a waist size that was 8 inches more than my teenage years. And while 8 inches might or might not seem like a lot, for me this was a huge difference in the way I looked and felt.
And the other sad part was that I didn’t only gain belly fat around my waist, I gained it in my legs, arms, chest and oh yeah, my butt.
And did I mention the fat in my face and neck?
I used to have just one chin. Now, I was the proud owner of 3 or more chins, depending on how I was bending my neck.
I don’t even know the total number of inches of loose fat in my belly, arms, legs and the rest of my body that I gained. But I know that the result on the scale was more than 50 pounds.
And maybe like you, I didn’t know how much all this fat had changed the way that I looked and how I looked to others. I had gained my weight over a number of years and had gotten used to how I looked.
But when I ran into an old high school friend on day, it was clear to me that I had changed substantially. He was nice but made a little joke how I must be ‘living the good life’. And I knew that he was talking about how GOOD I must be eating to have gained this much weight.
Right then, I knew that I had to do something about the ‘loose fat in belly’ status that I had gained due to my years of neglect.
But I didn’t know where to start. I first tried some of the fad diets. You probably know the ones that I am talking about. It seems like the hot new diet book is out every few months talking the best way to quickly get rid of loose fat in belly areas.
And to be fair, I found that I did lose belly fat with some of these diets. But, it was not long before I put all of the weight right back on. In fact, the belly fat usually started coming back right after I stopped the diets.
I also found that I had a hard time sticking to exercise plans. I would get all excited about one plan and do it for a couple of weeks, maybe even see some results. Then, I would miss a workout or two and quickly fall back into my old habits.
It was the same old roller coaster over and over again until I figured out these 5 things that helped me beat the nasty cycle of loose fat in belly areas and the related yoyo fat loss and weight gain.
One, Keep a daily journal of everything that you eat. You’ll be surprised what you put in your mouth that you don’t even remember at the end of a normal day.
Two, Keep a weekly journal of your exercise routine. Even if you are doing something as basic as walking 30 minutes a day for 3 – 4 days a week, the journal will help you keep track of whether you are being consistent with your exercise and will point out when you are skipping sessions.
Three, Find an accountability partner. This can be your husband, wife, best friend, somebody at work who also wants to lose belly fat. But get somebody involved who can exercise with you, review your food and exercise journals to see how your doing etc. You’ll be surprised how much it will motivate you to ‘do the right thing’ when you know that somebody else is watching over your shoulder.
Four, Make it fun. Find exercise and food options that you enjoy but also that will help you meet your goal of losing belly fat. You will never be successful if you hate to run but choose jogging as your form of exercise that is supposed to help you lose weight. And if you hate tomatoes, don’t eat them just because they are low in fat and supposedly healthy. There are plenty of other options.
Five, Set small achievable goals with target dates in the near future. If you are just starting out and you need to lose 100 pounds, don’t set your goal to lose 100 pounds. In fact, don’t set a weight goal at all. Set a small goal of walking for 30 minutes 3 times over the next week, track the walks on your exercise journal and share your success with your accountability partner.
These little successes will help change the way you feel about yourself and help motivate you to make permanent changes in your quest to get rid of loose fat in belly areas and the rest of your body.
