Thousands of people purchase some flowers for their loved ones every day – both on holidays or special dates, and just in order to impress their loved ones. This simple element of our everyday life still constitutes one of the longest traditions in the history of mankind.
Flowers have played a key role all throughout the history of mankind. Traces of their popularity are presented in numerous myths, religious texts, and folk tales. Some kinds of flowers were applied for food and are still used as food till the present day; others are famous for healing properties and are used in medicine. They were applied by Greeks and Romans a number of centuries ago as people at that time considered that the scent of flowers clears the atmosphere and decreases intoxication. Even celebrated conquerors known for their savageness and mercilessness while at war kept exotic gardens at home.
Due to the high valuation of flowers by mankind they became symbols of various nations. In this way, a rose represents a national emblem of England, Honduras and Iran. Italy in its turn is represented by a lily, Japan by a chrysanthemum, Russia by a sunflower, Brazil by a Cattleya and so forth.
The most significant function of flowers, however, is their ability to arouse profound human feelings and thoughts the way no other item can. These plants by some miracle embody beauty and tenderness. They are able to cheer up or to inspire on noble actions. A small bunch of flowers in the center of a table is a symbol of comfort. That is the reason why women, and specifically housewives, try to include fresh flowers in their planned expenses.
But flowers are symbolic not only in this way. Each flower has its own significance, and thus it can help in expressing people's feelings perfectly. Flowers have been applied for centuries to send different messages. For instance, the red carnation used to mean “my heart aches for you”. The recipient could answer with a cabbage rose (that would mean “I confess my love”) or a dried up white rose which in flower language means “you leave me cold”.
At present the most widespread way to tell about the feeling is sending a floral composition of 3 long-stemmed red roses to the woman you like.
